چکیده

The biology of the macro-element sulfur (S) is attracting an ever growing attention concerning cell physiology and human health. Sulfur metabolism works at the interplay between genetics and epigenetic as well as in the maintain of cell redox homeostasis. Indeed, unbalanced levels of S compounds in the body are actually under investigation as vulnerability factors and/or indicators of impaired cell oxidation state in a variety of human diseases. The purpose of this article is to overview some main S metabolic pathways in humans and their relevance in cell physiology and pathology. Since S is an essential nutrient for life, we first present its distribution and significance in the biosphere, focusing then on S metabolic fluxes which encompass S-containing amino acids (S-AAs), as well as sulfoconjugation, the synthesis and release of H2S together the formation of iron-sulfur cluster proteins. Despite the vastness of the topic, we would like to emphasize herein that the study of S networks in human pathology, especially in complex, multi-factorial disorders, deserves greater impulsion and deepening. HIGH-PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF SULFUR MUSTARD REACTION WITH AMINO ACIDS AND PROTEINS

The interaction of sulfur mustard with aminoacids and proteins has been investigated in this study. Rats were injected with sublethal doses of sulfur mustard subcutaneously and intraperitoneally. At different time intervals, plasma and urine samples were collected. The binding affinity of sulfur mustard with urinary and plasma proteins and enzymes was studied for the first time using non-i...

Metabolism of sulfur amino acids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Sulfur amino acid biosynthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae involves a large number of enzymes required for the de novo biosynthesis of methionine and cysteine and the recycling of organic sulfur metabolites. This review summarizes the details of these processes and analyzes the molecular data which have been acquired in this metabolic area. Sulfur biochemistry appears not to be unique through t...

THE METABOLISM OF SULFUR XxX1. THE DISTRIBUTION OF URINARY SULFUR AND THE EXCRETION OF KETO ACIDS AFTER THE ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF SOME DERIVATIVES OF CYSTINE AND METHIONINE TO THE RABBIT*

The enzymatic systems which effect the biological degradation of the sulfur-containing amino acids of the protein molecule, cystine and methionine, are not well understood. Knowledge of the intermediary stages in the metabolism of these amino acids is also lacking. When either of these amino acids is administered orally or parenterally in moderate amounts to the more common laboratory animals (...

Are we getting enough sulfur in our diet?

Sulfur, after calcium and phosphorus, is the most abundant mineral element found in our body. It is available to us in our diets, derived almost exclusively from proteins, and yet only 2 of the 20 amino acids normally present in proteins contains sulfur. One of these amino acids, methionine, cannot be synthesized by our bodies and therefore has to be supplied by the diet. Cysteine, another sulf...
